Scope of Work
The Merredin Solar Farm, located approximately 260 km east of Perth in Western Australia’s Central Wheatbelt, stands as the state’s largest completed solar installation. With an expected annual output of 274 GWh, it generates enough electricity to power approximately 42,000 Western Australian homes . The farm comprises approximately 360,000 solar panels mounted on a single-axis tracking system and 22 inverter stations that convert the power from the solar panels to alternating current (AC) before entering an onsite substation. A transformer within this substation increases the voltage for injection into the Merredin Terminal Substation.
Monford Group was entrusted with delivering all civil, mechanical, and electrical works for the Merredin Solar Farm. Our responsibilities encompassed the installation of photovoltaic (PV) modules, mounting structures, the DC electrical system, inverters, transformers, switchgear, SCADA systems, meteorological stations, internal roadworks, drainage, a storage facility, and the operations and maintenance (O&M) building and substation. By leveraging our expertise and efficient project management, we completed the construction from start to finish in just three months, setting a new benchmark for utility-scale solar delivery in the region
Innovations Challenges Overcome
At the Merredin Solar Farm, we played a pivotal role in driving efficiency and cost savings through innovative approaches to trenching, cable routing, and road design. One of our key contributions was identifying the opportunity to combine the HV and DC electrical cables in the same trench, with different layers. This solution eliminated the need for separate trenches, providing substantial savings in both installation and procurement costs. To further improve efficiency, we commissioned the fabrication of a customised jig designed to speed up solar panel installations. This jig allowed for faster, more precise panel handling, significantly boosting installation speed while maintaining high standards of safety. By integrating these innovations into the project, we helped deliver a more cost-effective and efficient solution that not only met client expectations but also set the foundation for a sustainable, high-performing solar farm. When Monford was engaged on the Merredin Solar Farm, the project was already behind schedule. To tackle this challenge, we quickly mobilised an experienced team and implemented strategies to get the project back on track. We ramped up resources, increased the workforce, and focused on efficient task management to ensure that every aspect of the project progressed rapidly without compromising quality. Despite the tight timeline, we met key milestones and adhered to the original program, completing the project on time. By leveraging our expertise, effective team coordination, and proactive problem-solving, we successfully delivered the Merredin Solar Farm as planned, ensuring client satisfaction and the continued success of the project.
