Project Yuri, a collaboration between Yara Clean Ammonia and ENGIE is leading the way in developing one of the world’s first industrial scale renewable hydrogen projects right here in Western Australia.

Over the past decade, Monford Group (Monford) have built a solid reputation for delivering creative and innovative solutions to construction and development projects of various specialisations around Australia.

Monford, in consortium with Technip Energies (TEN) have been awarded the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contract by our valued client ENGIE, helping unlock the Pilbara’s renewable energy potential. Project Yuri aims to establish a new industry value chain, harvesting the abundant renewable power in the Pilbara region to produce renewable hydrogen as a zero-carbon feedstock for Yara Australia’s ammonia production facility in Karratha.

The first phase of Project Yuri includes a 10 MW electrolyser, 18 MW of solar PV and 8MW / 8 MWh lithium-ion battery storage, scheduled for completion in 2024. Once commissioned, the project will be capable of producing up to 640 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year, leveraging on the abundant renewable resources in Western Australia and will be amongst the largest renewable energy powered electrolysis plant in the world.

Monford will be responsible for the Photovoltaic Solar Farm (PV), Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Energy Management System (EMS) engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and start up as well as the construction of the Hydrogen facilities and tie ins to the existing Yara infrastructure. Monford’s partner, TEN is responsible for the engineering, procurement, commissioning and start up of the electrolysis plant. Monford recognises that the key to a project’s success is through professional collaboration between all stakeholders. The consortium between Monford and TEN aims to deliver a project that will provide the model to accelerate the upscale of renewable hydrogen production in Australia for our valued client ENGIE.

Monford’s team of experienced and skilled workforce will deliver another cutting-edge renewable project working in an environment that generates future focused, solutions-based outcomes to best achieve safe, high quality and cost-effective results that are best for project.

Ciaran Shannon, Chief Commercial Officer, states: “Monford Group is privileged to be part of this cornerstone project which will set a benchmark for Australia’s Green Hydrogen ambition delivery program whilst paving the way for renewable hydrogen development worldwide. Monford Group is focused on delivering sustainable solutions and this project embodies the drive and ambition of the Monford team to strive for excellence.”

About ‘YURI’

Project Yuri is a collaboration between Yara Clean Ammonia and ENGIE Renewables Australia Pty Ltd (ENGIE) to develop a renewable hydrogen plant – supplying renewable hydrogen and renewable hydrogen and renewable electricity to Yara Pilbara Fertilisers Pty Ltd (Yara) at its neighbouring liquid ammonia facility. Commencing in November 2022 and scheduled for completion in 2024, the project is supported by the Australian Government with a $47.5 million grant through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)’s Renewable Hydrogen Deployment Funding Round. The project is also receiving $2 million funding from the Renewable Hydrogen Fund as part of the Western Australian Government’s Renewable Hydrogen Strategy. The project aims to bring Yara’s ammonia production facility to be recognised under the Smart Energy Council Zero Carbon Certification Scheme.
